Annual Notification of Building Occupants

On October 22, 1986, the President of the United States signed into law the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Toxic Substances Control Act. Under AHERA, the Environmental Protection Agency was directed to promulgate regulations which would require Local Education Agencies (LEAs) to address asbestos problems in their school buildings. In accordance with the statute, the regulations issued on October 30, 1987 (52 FR 41826), LEAs are required to inspect school buildings for asbestos-containing materials (ACBM), develop management plans, and implement response actions. A written plan has been developed for managing these materials while they remain in place.
