The one word that describes the Sixth Grade at IHGMS is
RESPONSIBILITY. While students and staff have an extremely fun and
exciting year, they are also quite focused on honing their skills
for the future. Organization is constantly practiced, as is personal
responsibility. The adults—teachers, paras, and parents—continue to
be a safety net, but the little birds are frequently set free in
order to ensure that their wings are ready for the challenges of the
upper grades. Middle
School 6th Grade
The Sixth Grade year is filled with reading and writing across the
curriculum, a very healthy dose of project-based learning, and— once
again—personal responsibility in many forms, including long-term
homework projects (journals, current events, and science home
labs). This is a year of transition from Everyday Math into the
methods employed later in Seventh and Eighth Grades and beyond. The
Ancient and Medieval Worlds will be explored through the Five Themes
of Geography. We will run Exchange City and learn in the wilderness
at Nature’s Classroom. All of this is done in trusting and caring
communities established through morning meeting circles. On second
thought, the one word that best describes Sixth Grade just might be…
