Raymond High School

Hello Raymond High School Families:

As of April 1, 2008 we have started the fourth quarter of the school year.  It seems that this year is moving extremely fast.  We have started our spring NWEA testing with the freshmen and the sophomores and we expect to complete those tests by April 11, 2008.  The juniors will be taking science NECAP tests in May for two days, more to come about those assessments.

The high school NEASC visiting committee will be in our school from April 13-16, 2008.  The visiting members will be interviewing teachers, students, parents, and administrators.  Students will also be shadowed during this visit which will give the committee members a student’s perspective.  The entire staff of RHS has put in a great deal of work preparing for this visit and I would like to say kudos to everyone for their hard work.

The music department will be departing on their Washington trip, Wednesday April 16, 2008.  Both the band and the chorus will be performing in Washington DC.  The band and chorus performances will be rated and reviewed.  Students will also have an opportunity to visit many of the historical monuments.  Best of luck to all those students involved.

Think spring and warm weather!

Sincerely,

Kirk Beitler, Principal

The meeting for everyone will start at 7:00 PM.  It will concentrate on the following:

A Program to Assist RHS Students Prepare for Highly-Competitive Colleges

How can a student best position herself or himself to be a strong candidate for highly-competitive colleges and universities?

Two recent RHS graduates, Eric Austrew (RHS '95, Yale '99, BU MBA & MIS ‘06) and Josh French (RHS '01, Duke '05, BC Law '08), will lead a discussion addressing this topic with the objective of establishing an on-going program in which students and parents will actively participate.

Topics to be discussed include:

            A.        Course selection (including advanced placement and honors courses);

            B.         Preparation for standardized tests (SAT reasoning, SAT subject tests, ACT);

            C.        Extra-curricular activities (sports, art, performing arts, school governance);

                D.            Summer programs;

            E.         Community involvement; and

            F.         Preparing for admissions interviews.

The intention is to have an interactive dialogue with the students, parents, faculty and others in attendance and to extend the discussion to any other related topics they wish to raise.  Please bring your ideas and questions!

Hopefully, students can leave the meeting with clearer individual game plans to be implemented over the next year or two to maximize their chances of getting into a top college.  We look forward to the conversation and continuing to help as they go down that road.

Organized Visits to Highly-Competitive Colleges and Universities

We are in the process of organizing a coordinated program of visits to some of the 22 highly-competitive colleges and universities (on the attached list) that are within a two-three hour drive of Raymond.  Deirdre Doyle and Andy Harmon have volunteered to assist in this effort.

Students are requested to send to us by Friday, April 18th, (by hand-delivery to Ms. Doyle or by email to info@reachhighscholars.com) a list in order of priority of up to ten of the colleges they would like to visit.  On the basis of this information, we will plan a series of possible one-day excursions, some of which hopefully can occur during the vacation week starting April 28th.

At the April 22nd Meeting, the following topics will be covered:

            A.        Description of a typical college visit;

            B.         Advantages of visiting several schools in the spring of the high school junior                                                        year, before the intense application period starts in the fall;

            C.        Advantages for sophomores and freshmen to learn what college life is all about                                                  and to get an early start on the process;

            D.        Specific logistics of up-coming visits.

St. Paul’s School - Advanced Studies Program

This program has been an important stepping stone in the past for RHS students who went on to highly competitive colleges.  We are delighted to announce that the following juniors have been accepted and will be attending the ASP this summer:
