Certify All
District Networks
The IT department is thrilled to
announce the addition of a new
diagnostic tool for the district, the
Signaltek FO test. This essential
tool will give the district the ability
to certify and diagnose its own networks
for speed and network cable run lengths.
This unit is so versatile that it can
detect a break in CAT 3,5e,6 & 7 cables
and even tell you how far away they are.
Why is that important? Because
network cable breaks (i.e. small cuts in
the network cable) can significantly
impair transmission speeds and cause
strange intermittent networking
problems. With this unit we will
be able to test each line in the
schools, find problem lines and replace
them! In addition, the Signaltek
FO can be left on a network connection
over night to test a network line.
In the morning the unit will produce a
printable result giving us the ability
to troubleshoot intermittent networking
problems.
As the
district becomes more dependent upon
networking speed the need to have each
line tested and "certified" to the 1gb
(1 Gigabit) standard is essential.
Not only is
this unit able to test Cat 3, 5e, 6 & 7
cables it can also test Fiber Optical
runs. In fact, the Signaltek FO is
the worlds first tester to handle both
copper networking runs AND Fiber Optics!
As the district begins its move over to
fiber optical connections it will be
essential to be able to test them from
time to time to insure top speed.
The High School, Middle School and
Elementary school all have internal
fiber runs inside the buildings, so we
will be able to put the fiber tester to
work right away.
The goal of
the IT department is to "certify" all
district networks by the end of Summer
2008. This means that we must
literally connect this unit to every
networking cable in the district and
test it. (There are literally
thousands of them) any line that fails
the 100mb standard will be pulled and
replaced.
